Gutter Materials — What Utah Homeowners Should Know
Gutter material determines cost, lifespan, and maintenance. Here's an honest breakdown for Utah homeowners.
Residential Gutters Projects
Aluminum: The Default Choice and Why
Aluminum is what we install on 90% of Utah residential projects. It's available in 0.027-inch standard and 0.032-inch heavy-gauge profiles. Heavy gauge is worth the modest upcharge on homes with heavy snow loads or where the fascia board will occasionally have a ladder leaning against it. Aluminum doesn't rust, takes paint well, and is light enough that the fascia attachment points don't carry excessive load. Expect 20–30 years with normal maintenance.
Copper: Premium Look, Premium Price
Copper gutters patina beautifully and last 50+ years. They're appropriate for high-end custom homes in neighborhoods like the Avenues, Olympus Cove, or East Bench where the premium appearance matches the architecture. Copper runs $20–30/linear foot installed, making a typical home project $4,500–$7,000. If budget allows and the home warrants it, copper is the best-performing gutter material we install.
Galvanized Steel: When to Consider It
Galvanized steel is stronger than aluminum and holds up better under heavy snow or ice load. It does rust eventually, though quality galvanized steel resists corrosion for 20+ years. We recommend it on homes where the gutter will regularly have ice hanging from it in winter — the extra strength matters. Installed cost is similar to aluminum heavy-gauge.
Gutter Guards: Which Work and Which Don't
Micro-mesh guards are the only variety we recommend. They block debris while allowing water through. Surface-tension (reverse-curve) guards work poorly in heavy cottonwood-seed and pine-needle environments common in Utah's canyon communities. Foam inserts trap debris and become planters. Quality micro-mesh guards cost $5–10/linear foot installed. They reduce cleaning from twice a year to every 2–3 years.
Common Questions
- What color options are available for aluminum gutters?
- Standard aluminum gutter coil comes in 30+ colors including most popular soffit, fascia, and trim colors. We can match your fascia board color for a seamless look. Color is baked into the coil coating and typically holds 15–20 years before fading.
- Can I add gutter guards to my existing gutters?
- Yes, micro-mesh guards can be installed on existing aluminum gutters as long as they're in good condition and properly pitched. We'll inspect the existing system before recommending guards — guards on sagging or leaking gutters aren't a solution.
