Utah crew, owner-led

When Black Canyon Exteriors sends a crew to your property, those are our W-2 employees — not day labor sourced from a staffing agency the morning of the job. That means the person installing your siding today worked on a siding crew last week and will be on another one next week. They know the product. They know what a quality install looks like. And if something needs adjusting mid-job, they have the authority to make the call without waiting for a phone tree. Owner involvement isn’t a sales line here — it’s how we actually run the work.

The crew

Jeremy Atkinson

Founder & Owner

Specialty: Siding, windows, project management

18 years’ experience

Jeremy started in the exterior trades in 2008, working residential siding and window crews across Salt Lake and Utah counties before moving into project management. After years watching customers get strung along by contractors who disappeared after the deposit, he launched Black Canyon Exteriors in 2016 with a single rule: show up when you say you will and leave the site cleaner than you found it. He holds a Utah DOPL B100 general contractor license and personally walks every estimate over fifteen thousand dollars. Hands-on and opinionated about materials — he will tell you what he would do on his own house, not what earns the highest margin. Lives in South Jordan with his family. You will recognize the 2015 white F-250 on-site.

Marcus Reyes

Operations Manager

Specialty: Asphalt, crack seal, seal coat, striping

14 years’ experience

Marcus spent eight years on UDOT subcontractor paving crews before joining Black Canyon, running equipment on state highway overlays, airport taxiway repairs, and municipal utility-cut restoration projects across the Wasatch Front. He leads the paving and pavement-maintenance division — asphalt repairs, crack sealing, seal coat, and striping — and manages scheduling for commercial property managers who need their lots back in service on a tight window. OSHA 30 certified. MUTCD-certified for temporary traffic control, which matters on jobs where lanes and lot sections have to stay live during work. Father of three. If your project needs a coordinated phased schedule around business operations, Marcus is who you want handling logistics.

Tyler Briggs

Siding & Cladding Lead

Specialty: Fiber cement, vinyl siding, insurance restoration

11 years’ experience

Tyler has worked fiber cement and vinyl siding exclusively for eleven years. He is a James Hardie Elite Preferred Contractor certified installer — a designation that requires documented installation volume and quality verification, not just a training day. Utah hail events generate a significant share of Black Canyon's siding work, and Tyler has navigated dozens of insurance-claim restoration projects, working directly with adjuster timelines and providing the documentation carriers require. EPA RRP lead-paint certified for jobs on pre-1978 housing stock. His crew handles everything from a single damaged panel replacement to full commercial building re-clads. Based in Sandy. Particular about flashing details and water management — he will show you what he is doing and why.

Dana Kowalski

Gutters & Windows Lead

Specialty: Seamless gutters, gutter guards, window retrofit

9 years’ experience

Dana fabricates and installs seamless gutters on-site — the aluminum is coiled on the truck and formed to the exact length needed, which eliminates the seams where sectional gutters leak. Nine years doing gutter and window work across residential and light commercial properties in Utah County and Salt Lake County. Certified installer for Pella, Milgard, and Andersen window lines, covering both insert replacements and full-frame tear-outs. LeafFilter-certified gutter guard installer for properties where maintenance access is difficult or debris load is high. Runs the continuing-education apprentice program each winter — a job that requires knowing the right way to explain why flashing matters and why fascia condition determines gutter longevity more than the gutter material does.

Sam Nguyen

Estimator & Customer Lead

Specialty: Project estimating, customer coordination, written scopes

7 years’ experience

Sam is the first voice you hear when you call Black Canyon. Seven years estimating exterior projects — takeoffs, written scopes, material quantities, and line-item proposals that customers and insurance adjusters can actually read. Organized in the way that field crews appreciate: scopes are complete before work starts, change orders are documented in writing, and nothing falls through because someone forgot to order it. If Sam does not have an answer to your question, you will hear back within one business day or he escalates it directly to Jeremy. Bilingual English and Vietnamese. Works with property managers across the Draper, Lehi, and Orem markets on commercial accounts that require detailed documentation for HOA boards and corporate approvals.

How we hire

Everyone who works on a Black Canyon crew goes through a background check before they set foot on a residential property. Drug screening is standard across all roles. References are checked, not just collected. We don’t rotate in new faces because a job got bigger than planned — if we win more work than our current crew can handle, we schedule around that instead of solving it with strangers.

Ongoing training is part of the job. Product certifications from manufacturers like James Hardie and Pella require installation-method testing — we maintain those certifications because they matter for the warranty pass-through you receive as the property owner. Safety training is not optional: OSHA 10 for all crew, OSHA 30 for crew leads. We don’t treat it as a checkbox. We treat it as the reason our people come home at the end of every shift.
