Sizing Matters More Than Most Homeowners Realize

Most Utah homes were built with 4-inch gutters, which were undersized for the roof areas they serve. We install 5-inch K-style on most single-family homes and 6-inch K-style on homes with steep pitches or large roof sections. Undersized gutters overflow at the fascia and saturate the soil against your foundation — exactly what gutters are supposed to prevent. We calculate runoff volume from your roof pitch and drainage area and specify the right size before we quote.

Seamless vs Sectional Gutters

Sectional gutters connect in 10–12 foot lengths with seams that eventually leak. Seamless gutters are roll-formed on-site from a continuous coil of aluminum, with seams only at corners and downspout outlets. Leaks at seams are the most common residential gutter failure — eliminating most of them dramatically extends the life of the system. Seamless gutters run $7–12/linear foot fully installed.

Downspout Placement and Extensions

A good gutter system ends with downspouts placed at low points and transitions in the roofline, with extensions that direct water at least 4 feet away from the foundation. Most homes we see have downspouts that terminate 6 inches from the foundation — not good enough. We extend downspouts and, where the grade allows, tie them into underground drains that daylight away from the structure.

What Gutters Cost for a Typical Utah Home

A typical 2,000–2,800 sq ft Utah home with 180–240 linear feet of gutter runs $2,000–$4,000 for a complete seamless aluminum system installed. Gutter guard systems add $600–$2,400 depending on the product and linear footage. Larger homes, multiple roof sections, and underground drainage work push totals higher.

Common Questions

How often should gutters be cleaned in Utah?
Twice a year is the standard recommendation — once after the cottonwood seed drop in late spring, and once after the fall leaf drop. Homes near large deciduous trees may need three cleanings per year. Gutter guards reduce frequency but don't eliminate the need entirely.
How long do aluminum gutters last?
Properly installed seamless aluminum gutters last 20–30 years. The failure points are the seams at corners and downspout outlets — we use quality sealant and rivets, and we back our seam work for 5 years.
Do I need gutters if I have good overhangs?
Wide overhangs help, but they don't replace gutters in Utah's climate. Spring snowmelt runs high volume for weeks. Concentrated drip lines from overhangs saturate the soil in one spot and can direct water into window wells. Gutters route all of that away from the foundation.
